Sunrises & Sunsets
I don't think I have ever gone out to intentionally photograph a sunrise or a sunset. However, as any landscape photographer will tell you, the best time to shoot landscapes is about one hour after sunrise and one hour before sunset. The light at these times is perfect and creates the shadows and colour needed.
Because of this I am usually at a location before the sun comes up or there as the sun goes down. On occasions I will witness beautiful sunrises and sunsets and I will always take the opportunity to photograph them if they are worthwhile.
Cameras have their limitations and one of the skills of a good photographer is to be aware of them and know how to judge the difference between what the eye sees and what the camera will record. In 99% of cases the camera will not be able to record exactly what the eye sees for many reasons. However, this is one case where the eye does not always see as much as the camera records. Sometimes the colours are so mixed and bright that the eye tends to subdue what is really there, and I am often quite amazed when I see the results. With careful editing some incredible colours can be rendered in the finished results.
Even when there is no apparent rich colours in the sky the camera holds on to everything and we can often start with what appears to be a very mundane image and finish with something quite spectacular.
