Scotland
We don't have too many mountains in Essex and I suppose, compared with some parts of the world even the mountains of Scotland are considered small but they can be breathtaking when the light is right.
I have spent more time in Glencoe than any other part of Scotland, mainly because of the stunning colours and beautiful mountains. Some of the best scenery I have found is in Glencoe and the routes up to the Isle of Skye. If you find yourself in the area do take the road from Fort William to Mallaig, known as the road the the isles (A830). The road takes you past several lochs and you will not fail to capture some of the best landscapes Scotland has to offer.
Over the past couple of years I have traveled in Scotland quite a bit and apart from Glencoe I can also recommend Skye, Pitlochry, Loch Garten and anywhere around Loch Tay and Loch Earn. You will find great images to be had, especially if the light is kind to you.
One of the things found in abundance in Scotland is stone and rocks, they come a close second to water. Scotland is an enchanting Country when the weather is good but even when it rains, which it does regularly, there are some wonderful images to be found.
Waterfalls are everywhere and the rocks and banks surrounding them contain the most fantastic colours, especially when wet.
Find the House of Bruar and take a short walk up to the falls from the car park. There are several and become more spectacular as you walk. When you have finished you could do worse than have lunch at the House of Bruar, although i would suggest, unless you are rich, don't go shopping there. What they sell is quality but it comes at a price.

Kenmore Loch Tay
Rannoch Moor, part of Glencoe, on the face of it looks quite baron, but first thing in the morning, particularly a morning without wind, the water is like glass and the light across the moor is breath taking. It is also worth a visit in the evening when the light is low and warm. Rowan trees growing straight out of rock backed by mountains make perfect pictures. If the skies are stormy it can be just as rewarding.
Scotland is littered with Castles of varying shapes sizes and ages. Ellen Donnan Castle is on the road to The Kyle of Lochalsh and you should definitely visit, try to avoid the tourists by going early in the morning.
So, if you have never visited Scotland, photographer or not, put it on your list of things to do soon.
