Night & Low light

Strictly speaking a great deal of landscape work would sit under this category as I shoot landscapes either early in the morning or late in the evening, much of it is shot in low light conditions. Good landscape photography is not so much about the quantity of light as the quality.

A tripod is an integral part of a photographer's equipment, or at least it should be. Exposures of over a second are not uncommon, in fact the longest exposure I have used on any shot was about 15 minutes. Working in very low light is not something I worry too much about, my main concern is that the quality of the light is sufficient to give me a pleasing image.

The images on this page were specifically taken to show either that they were taken at night or they were taken in an obvious low light situation.

Night photography is not just a matter of waiting until dark and taking the picture. Quite often it will involve mixed light sources, that is to say that there will still be some level of daylight but the image will include tungsten light. Mixed light sources can cause problems as they are at different ends of the spectrum. On the other hand, if used correctly, it can enhance the image.

One piece of advice when shooting images in very low light, especially at night. Before you take any pictures allow your eyes to become accustomed to the light, you will start to see detail in the scene you didn't see when you arrived. This will allow you to asses the situation better.

I enjoy the challenge associated with low light conditions, although time consuming and requiring a large degree of patience, the results can be very rewarding.
