HDR High Dynamic Range
High Dynamic Range images will probably mean very little to any "non photographers" browsing this page. Until recently I have done very little with HDR. Even though much of my work is taken in situations where HDR techniques would make a difference, it wasn't until one of my students asked me to spend some time looking at HDR techniques with him that I decided to look a bit deeper at the technique.
HDR deals with images where the difference between the highlights, the brighter points of the picture, and the shadows, the darker areas, is so great that the camera can not record them in one shot. Under these circumstances it is necessary to take several images at different exposures and combine them on the computer.
Although we can combine the images manually it is rather time consuming and there are a few very good software packages available, including Photoshop, which has its own built in one.
Not all subjects work with HDR but it can produce some stunning images containing great detail.
Software used to create these images: Photomatix and Photoshop.
